Win 98 OS Installation Instructions
This is for a new hard drive with no information on it!

Applies to: Win 98
Last updated: Saturday October 06, 2007.

SUMMARY

Now that you have your new hard drive installed and the BIOS sees it fine, you now have to prepare it to receive the operating system. Here are the basic instructions to do that.

(I have also put in some tips to make the installation faster.)

PROCEDURE

Create a Win 95 boot disk with the following 6 files

(Or use the boot disk.zip on our download Page)

1.Himem.sys

2.smartdrv.exe

3.edit.com

4.xcopy.exe

5.xcopy32.exe

6.mscdex.exe

For IDE hard drives, obtain a copy of generic CD-Rom drivers (ex Mitsumi)

(See our download page for an IDE.Zip file)

For SCSI hard drives use the (scsi CD-Rom driver disk) and type dosinst.exe

Check the BIOS to make sure that the computer is reading the hard drive correctly.

Ø      Insert the win 95 boot disk that was created, and reboot the computer

Ø      At the a: prompt type fdisk /mbr (this will clear the master boot record)

Ø      Type fdisk again and then create a new “primary DOS partition” and then make the partition active

Ø      From the  a: prompt type  “ format c: /s “  This will format and “sys” the drive. (When complete remove disk and reboot- the computer should boot to a  c: prompt)

Ø      Insert the boot disk and reboot again the computer will then boot to an  a: prompt

Type  copy himem.sys c: (then hit enter) then repeat this process for the other five files mentioned above.

Ø      Insert the Mitsumi CD-ROM driver disk (for IDE drives) and then type “ setupd “ and follow the directions.

Ø      Type in  c: this should bring you to a c: prompt

Ø      At the  c: prompt type dir and hit enter,  you should see all the files copied previously

Ø      At the  c: prompt type edit config.sys and hit enter

Ø      Add in a line  “ DEVICE=HIMEM.SYS “ (type alt f and file and save)

Ø      At the  c: prompt type edit autoexec.bat and hit enter

Ø      Change lastdrive=m to lastdrive=z

Ø      Add in a line that says “ smartdrv.exe  (type alt f and file and save)

Ø      At the c: prompt type md win98  (this will create a new directory for the win 98 install files)

Ø      Take out the boot floppy and reboot the computer

Ø      The computer should come up to a c; prompt and a new drive letter for the CD-Rom (most likely D: drive)

Ø      Insert the Win 98 Cd and type in “ d: “ (this should bring you to a d: prompt)

Ø      Type in  “ cd/win98 “ and hit enter

Ø      Type in  path=c:

Ø      Type in  xcopy /s *.* c:\win98 and then hit enter

Ø      This will copy all directories from the Win98 CD-Rom to the c:\win98 directory (because the himem.sys and the smartdrv.exe were loaded in the boot-up, this copy should only take about 5 minutes)

Ø      After all the files have been copied type c: and hit enter

Ø      At the  c: prompt type in  cd/win98 and hit enter

Ø      Type in “ setup ‘ and hit enter

Ø      This will install Windows 98 on the C: Drive

Ø      Follow all directions to set up your new Win 98 installation to meet your personal needs.
