NT4 Installation Tips:
The 2 GB partition limit

Applies to: NT4 Server and Workstation
Last updated: Saturday October 06, 2007.

SUMMARY
Windows NT will only install on a 2 GB (Fat 16 Partition)
If you try to install in on a larger FAT 32 partition, the install will fail
and the error message won't tell you that the partition size is the reason!

PROCEDURE
If installing from scratch, Do an fdisk from a boot floppy and do NOT
use large disk support.
Create a new partition and set it active. (You may have to delete the
old partition first if it was formatted in FAT32.
You then can format the new 2GB partition or just leave it blank. Using
the NT boot disks will give you the option of formatting it in FAT 32 or
NTFS.
After the OS is installed, you can convert it to NTFS and then use a
partitioning utility such as Powerquest's Partition Magic to "stretch
the NTFS 2GB Partition to the full extent of the hard drives capacity (or
anywhere in between!)
I have used this procedure many times and it works well!
