ICanHelp.com Customer Support -- Tech Note #5
Things to consider before installing a new OS
Drivers, System information and Plug and Pray

Applies to: Win 95, Win98
Last updated: Saturday October 06, 2007.

SUMMARY Considerations
Although Windows 98 comes with a plug and play option, this is no guarantee
that it will "see" all of your hardware components correctly!
It is worth the time to make sure you have written down the hardware in your
computer. This includes the manufacturer, Make and Model number of your Video
card, Sound card, Modem, Ethernet card, etc. before you install. If you
have a motherboard installation disk a lot of the drivers will be there. (If it
has "onboard" peripherals) It is worthwhile to go to the
Internet and download the drivers to floppy so that you can install them as you
need them.
Note: I have not built one system yet that "saw" all of the drivers
needed to get the system up to date. (Is that why the call it Plug and Pray?)

Procedure
After writing down the information required, you can go to the manufacturers
web site and download the drivers required.
(Usually www."manufactuer".com
- please contact us for those hard to find drivers)
Note: Don't forget to write down the information that was given to you by
your Internet Provider Service (ISP) so that you can connect again when you
reinstall.
