Running Defrag and Scandisk

Applies to: Win 95, Win98
Last updated: Saturday October 06, 2007.

SUMMARY Defrag & Procedure
As your system continues to add programs and other software, it will begin to
become fragmented. Simply put, this means that windows writes a any available
open space on the hard disk as it installs or writes data. After awhile the
computer will have to find this information in many different spots and
"reassemble" it to form the correct sequence.
If the computer is highly fragmented.. it will take much longer to find these
files, slowing the system down. Fortunately, Microsoft has a built in tool to
get these files back in order to run the system faster.
To run Defrag...
Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Defragmenter
(Highlight and Enter)
Follow the prompts.

Summary Scandisk and Procedure
From time to time due to lock ups, improper
shutdowns, power fluctuations, etc. your
system might develop corrupt files. Running a Scandisk on your system will
find these files and try to repair them. If the file cannot be repaired, it will
save it on the C: drive so that a technician can look at it and try to tell if a
program needs to be re installed.
To Run Scandisk...
Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Scandisk
(Highlight and Enter)
Follow the prompts.
