Win 95 - 98 - XP or 2000 OS Installation Instructions
This is for a new hard drive with no information on it!

Applies to: Win 95 - 98 - XP - 2000
Last updated: Saturday October 06, 2007.

SUMMARY
Now that you have your new hard drive installed and the BIOS sees it fine,
you now have to prepare it to receive the operating system. Here are the basic
instructions to do that.
(I have also put in some tips to make the installation faster.)

PROCEDURE
Create a Win 95B boot disk. (I prefer using the
Win95B boot disk as it has FDISK, MBR and FAT32 options built in!)
(You can use the EZ boot disk.exe on our
download Page)
Check the BIOS to make sure that the computer is reading
the hard drive correctly.
Ø
Insert the win 95B boot disk that was created, and reboot the
computer
Ø
At the a: prompt type fdisk /mbr (this will clear the master
boot record)
Ø
Type fdisk again and then create a new “primary DOS
partition” and then make the partition active
(If the new hard drive had a previous
O/S - You will have to delete it and then complete the above step - see FDISK
instructions to delete old partition. Then return to main menu.)
Ø
From the a: prompt
type “ format c: /s “
This will format and “sys” the drive. (When complete remove disk and
reboot- the computer should boot to a c:
prompt)
(Remember to save any information that you might need
from your "old" hard drive!!!)
Ø
Insert the boot disk and reboot again the computer will then
boot to an a: prompt
Ø
At the c: prompt type md win98
(or appropriate) (this will create a new directory for the win 98 (or
appropriate) install files)
(Win95 for Win95 or i386 for Win2K, NT or XP)
Ø
Take out the boot floppy and reboot the computer
Ø
The computer should come up to a c: prompt and a new drive
letter for the CD-Rom (most likely R: drive)
Ø
Insert the Win 98 Cd ) Or appropriate) and type in “ r: “ (this should bring
you to a r: prompt)
Ø
Type in “ cd/win98
“ (or appropriate) and hit enter
Ø
Type in path=c:
Ø
Type in xcopy /s
*.* c:\win98 (or appropriate) and then hit enter
Ø
This will copy all directories from the Win98 CD-Rom to the
c:\win98 (or appropriate) directory
Ø
After all the files have been copied type c: and hit enter
Ø
At the c: prompt
type in cd/win98 (or appropriate) and hit enter
Ø
Type in “ setup ‘ (Or winnt for Win2K, XP or NT4) and hit enter
Ø
This will install Windows 98 (or appropriate) on the C: Drive
Ø
Follow all directions to set up your new Win 98 (or
appropriate) installation to
meet your personal needs.
